Development & Humanitarian: Australian Himalayan Foundation in Nepal

Conor has worked with Australian Himalayan Foundation shooting photo assignments and creating video stories in Nepal, Bhutan and Australia. 

AHF is committed to improving the quality of life of those living in remote areas of the Himalaya. They work in partnership with communities to help the most disadvantaged meet their needs through integrated improvements in education, health and the environment. You can visit their website here. 

  • Class 8 students at Genekha Primary School complete a test outside. The Australian Himalayan Foundation in partnership with RENEW Bhutan provides scholarships through a reintegration program for children who are survivors of rape, children of victims and survivors of domestic violence.
  • Delisha 10 years old (right)  walks off to a nearby well to bathe themselves before preparing for school.  Delisha attends Brendra Jyoti Higher Secondary School in Nele and is a recipient of an AHf scholarship. The scholarship pays for her school fees and also provides material support including school books, uniform, and an umbrella.
  • Students walk in grades to their classrooms at Birendrodroya Higher Secondary School in Mukli, lower Solu Khumbu District, Nepal. AHF through its partner REED has provided teacher-training programs for the schools teachers while a number of the students also received scholarships.
  • Students play in the school ground at Jana Jagriti Lower Secondary School in Salleri. The Australian Himalayan Foundation through its Nepal partner REED runs teacher training programs for the teachers at the Jana Jaguti Lower Secondary School in the remote Solu Khumbu District of Nepal.

  • Nirmala Rai (second from left) studies in class 4 at Birendrodroya Higher Secondary School. Nirmala is one of the recipients of an AHF scholarship. AHF through its partner REED has provided teacher-training programs for the schools teachers while a number of the students also received scholarships. .
  • Birendrodroya Higher Secondary School grade 2 teacher Dil Kumari Rai leads her  students in an interactive exercise. Dil has participated in the teacher-training program four times most recently in 2011.
  • The weekly market in Nele is a big event in the lower Solu Khumbu District. Many people come to buy and sell local goods as well as imported goods from China and India.
  • Gita Bhujel and her two daughter Delisha and Babita look out from their home in Nele a small village in the lower Solo Khumbu region of Nepal. Delisha Bhujel was a successful recipient of an AHF scholarship which assists her Mother cover the school fees.

  • On Saturdays at Bitika Lower Secondary School students have half a day of classes and then attend a weekly activity which in this case was a storytelling competition.

  • Gita Bhujel heads off to find grass and plants she can harvest to feed her goats. Gita is a single mother of three and has very few means of generating income. Gita's daughter Delisha last year received an AHF scholarship. The scholarship provides material support for Delisha schooling needs and Gita said she previously had to take out small loans to buy these things.
